Ironman Tom shines on the world stage

Wednesday, November 25, 2009, 16:54

BODMIN'S Tom Davey earned a creditable finish after taking his talents to the international stage at the Ironman World Championship 70.3 in the United States.

After months of hard work and preparation, the 23-year-old took his place among the world's best triathletes to take part in the gruelling event, held in Clearwater, Florida.

With more than 1,500 competing in the 18-24 age category, Davey finished 217th, setting a new personal best time of 4hrs 17mins.

The Championships start with a 1.2 mile swim, followed by a 56-mile cycle, culminating with a half marathon.

Davey, a member of the Camel Valley Cycling & Triathlon Club in Wadebridge, held a good position following the swim and cycle, but lost some ground on his opponents in the 13.1 mile run.

"Up to the run I was flying, but I don't think I got my nutrition right so that meant I lost a few places," said Davey.

"I was quite high up when I came off the bike, so it was a little bit disappointing not to keep my place in the run. It was an awesome experience, though, I still managed to set a new personal best so I'm quite happy."

Germany's Michael Raelert claimed victory in a time of 3hrs 34mins, with Salisbury-born Julie Dibens, now based in the United States, finishing first in the women's event (3hrs 59mins)

"The competition was very tough and the top 10 finished with new world records," revealed Davey. It was an absolutely awesome experience, competing alongside the best in the world."

The Championships took place on Saturday, November 14, although he arrived five days earlier with his father in order to acclimatise to the conditions.

The trip, which cost over £1,000, wouldn't have been made possible, Davey added, without the generosity of sponsors.

A number of businesses have come forward since learning about Davey's success in the sport. After securing a sponsorship deal with QES International, a number of other organisations have come forward. South West Water,

Ian Mackellar Driving School, Clive Mitchell Cycles, Allsports Nutrition and Snugg Wetsuits have also provided help.

"I have received a huge amount of help from businesses," said Davey.

"I am so grateful for all the help I have received and none of this would have been made possible without their support."

Following an exhausting year for the former Loughborough University student, Davey will now take a well-earned rest before deciding whether or not to continue in the sport.

"I'm not sure what I'm going to do next, but I suppose at some point I will need to join the real world and get a job," joked Davey.
