Goodman proud of Saints despite loss

THE first win still eludes Columba despite a strong showing against Wessex.
Saints' Glen Cavanagh found himself in the sin bin after five minutes and Wessex flanker Phil Bye exploited the blind side gap to pinch the lead.
Columba had plenty of possession but didn't capitalise on it until fly-half Ben Green potted the penalty kick after the Exeter outfit were caught offside.
Coach Chris Goodman said afterwards: "It was there for the taking and we didn't do it.
"We were better today and the team should be proud of themselves after last week's hammering by Saracens."
Goodman's chat at half-time inspired Columba down the Defiance Field slope, but a wrong option cost three points that could have given them the lead.
Wessex, clinging on from the Columba line-outs and scrummaging, had one last attack with the ball going loose to Lee Boatfield two minutes from time and the Exeter winger scored unopposed.
Meanwhile, Columba have signed flanker Martin Ruskin, a Navy under-23 player, to bolster their squad.
Plym Barbarians...5 Exeter Saracens...55
BARBARIANS coach Terry Bartlett conceded that Saracens were worthy of their second place after his side went down 55-5 at Bull Point.
Stung by three tries inside 20 minutes, Barbarians never recovered and with good phase play from the Exeter outfit, winger Ben Croft notched a four-try tally.
Barbarians regrouped in the second half when fly-half John Bowden was fed the ball from the back of a scrum and found a gap for a 30-metre sprint to Sarries' line.
But they committed errors that let the Exeter side through the home defence. Scrum-half Joe Pearce grabbed two tries, with flankers Alistair Fraser and Sam Williams scoring a try each.
Centre Sam Gooch added Sarries' ninth try before being replaced by Bryan Logan, who joined full-back Dean Chisling on kicking duties.
Torrington...16 Tamar Saracens...9
SARACENS slip behind Honiton and Wesssex despite having a three-penalty lead at the break, thanks to fly-half George Simmonds.
Torrington put aside recent form after the break with a workmanlike performance earning them the victory.
Evergreen winger Chris Beer got the touchdown, with fly-half Andy Manning converting, leaving Torrington 9-7 adrift at the break.
With his side smarting from two heavy reversals against the two clubs above them, Manning potted three second-half penalty kicks to grind out the win.
