Honey hopes his team will not come unstuck against Tavvy

Friday, November 21, 2008, 07:00

DEVONPORT Services coach Dave Honey is warning his team not to be complacent over facing underdogs Tavistock in the EDF Senior Vase.

Services have a chance of reaching the fourth round – the stage they went out last season to eventual winners Hartbury.

Western Counties West outfit Services should, on paper, be capable of seeing off Tavistock when they entertain the Cornwall/Devon side at the Rectory tomorrow (2.30pm).

But Honey said: "We played them last year over at their place and for the first 20 minutes we were on the defensive.

"We won't underestimate them, but if we do our job, we will get a result. We are still a young team, but we know what we are capable of.

"We were disappointed with our loss against Cullompton last week, but we usually bounce back from a loss the following week.

"It's important to have a good cup run, because it helps your league season as well.

"If you get to the later stages, then you end up playing sides who are from the London area and you tend to learn a lot from these matches because they play a different game to you."

Honey added: "We want to go as far as we can in the cup, because it's not just about the prestige, as the club gets a cash award for every round you get through."

Captain Brian Crichton returns to the Services line up after a week off.

Tavistock coach Steve Rush, meanwhile, will feel little, if any, pressure about playing at the Rectory.

He said: "It's no-pressure rugby, which is rather nice. If we win, that's great and if we lose, there's no shame.

"We're looking forward to the challenge and I suppose we are the underdogs.

"We did, however, have a good result in putting out Kingsbridge in the last round."

Matt Wicher returns to the Tavistock squad after injury.
