Old Techs overpower rivals Plympton in first half

Monday, November 17, 2008, 07:00

TRIBUTE DEVON TWO Old Techs...29 Plympton Victoria...0

TECHS' catch and drive game with effective rucks and mauls put paid to Plympton in the first half at Weston Mill.

Full-back Ryan Tunnicliffe opened the account with a penalty and converted the next three tries.

A catch and drive from prop Simon Raymont and a repeat off second row Dan Shepherd led to number eight Chris Lancefield scoring off the back of a scrum.

Techs hooker Steve Wilkinson slipped off the back of a ruck to score and set up a 26-point lead at the interval.

It was a different story in the second half with Plympton testing the home defence for most of the period.

Tunnicliffe added a penalty for the only points after the break and late pressure from Techs saw winger Martin Cooper tackled short of the Plympton line.

Ilfracombe...14 DHSOB...13

OLD Boys travelled with a scratch side due to late cry-offs and came away from Donnacroft disappointed to have lost to two penalty tries having held the lead for most of the match.

DHS had a deserved lead with two penalty kicks from Alex Buckley when Ilfracombe camped on the Old Boys' line. One scrum incident too many gave the home side the try and Paul Prentice converted.

The match had some good handling moves from both teams with Ilfracombe missing two penalty chances to increase their lead after the break.

The Ilfracombe pack drove Devonport over their try line, a second penalty try was awarded, and Prentice made it 14-6. Buckley's third penalty nosed Devonport closer but the fly-half failed to steal the lead with his kick after second row Alec Elford's try put Devonport within one point.

The Old Boys had the home team under the cosh during a nail-biting last 10 minutes and there was relief at the final whistle for Ilfracombe.

Buckfastleigh...53 Plym Argaum...3

RAMBLERS crushed rivals Argaum with winger Daniel Partridge grabbing a hat-trick as his side led 27-3 at the break.

Number eight Darren Greep landed a brace with wing Matt Greep scoring a solo effort, with similar scores from scrum-half Sam Bairstow and flanker Matt Pike. Fly-half Steve Chapple added the kicks.

Meanwhile, many in local rugby circles will be saddened by the death of Buckfastleigh's Martin Baker on Friday.

Baker had been a stalwart of the Ramblers since their formation in 1992 and despite a long illness was at their match with New Cross a few weeks ago.

CORNWALL MERIT TABLE Saltash II...34 Bodmin II...3

SALTASH scored in the 15th minute with a try through centre Will Virgo, converted by fly-half Steve Down for a 7-0 lead, which Bodmin reduced with a penalty on the half hour.

Ashes number eight Neil Grose capped a fine performance to go over for the try and a 12-3 lead that became 15-3 with a Down penalty goal.

Saltash didn't score again until the 55th minute when wing Kieran Hurrell went over for a fine try, converted by Down.

Virgo's second try of the match, converted by Down, took the score to 29-3 and centre Martin Nicholas went over for a try and the final score of the game.
