ARGYLE will have to appoint a new captain after Simon Walton (pictured right) completed a move to League One outfit Hartlepool United yesterday.

The Pilgrims agreed to release the midfielder, 24, from the remaining 12 months of his contract for 'family reasons'.

It allows him to be closer to his family home in Leeds and also to be nearer to his young daughter.

Walton's departure from Home Park could see former promotion-winning skipper Paul Wotton take over the armband from him – as well as penalty taking duties.

Wotton re-signed for the Pilgrims in January, three-and-a-half years after leaving the club.

Another possibility for the vacancy at captain is experienced centre-back Darren Purse (pictured right).

Walton was in Plymouth on Thursday, but did not take part in Argyle's training session at UCP Marjon, Derriford.

He travelled to the north east of England to complete his move to Hartlepool yesterday.

“Simon WALTON did more than his fair share keeping Argyle alive last season, although he was so frustrating at times. I wish him and his family the best for the future. He has enough years left to become a consistently good player. However I tend to think that this move is more to do with Mr FLETCHER's policy of players having to live in or around Plymouth. If so then it bodes well for the future of the club. Dave. North Devon.”

“Good luck to Simon hope the move works out for him,but I think Paul Wotton should have been given the armband for next season even if he had stayed.”

“Sorry to see Simon has left us but surely family comes first, if a player has family on his mind while playing away from them surely he cannot focus on the game he's taking part in. Good luck Simon.”
