Steve Allen, manager of the Plymstock office of Bradleys, gives some tips on titivating your home...

With time off over the Christmas period, for some it is a chance to catch up on the jobs they have been putting off or have not had the time to get round to.

This is especially appropriate to those people thinking of selling their homes in the New Year.

It is a wonderful opportunity to take heed of all the advice and react to the key phrases used such as 'declutter' and 'first impressions'.

However, these well-worn words always ring true and it is worth doing what is right as everyone should give themselves the best chance to sell.

So with this in mind here are a few more tips to consider.

Try to create light and space, especially in smaller properties.

Take down net curtains or at least give them a clean if you want to keep your privacy.

Vertical blinds allow more light and provide a more modern feel.

Clean your windows too and while you're at it – clean or even paint your front door as this is the first thing people notice as they arrive.

On the inside, keep kitchen work surfaces free of unnecessary items and bathrooms, too.

Carpets need to be clean and get rid of the marks and stains that draw the attention.

Repainting rooms often is done but it does not always have to be magnolia. Keep it a light neutral colour though.

Look at the layout of a room as well. People live to suit their own lifestyle and some times moving things around gives a room a better flow and is more appealing to the viewers.

“Vertical blinds, neutral colours, minimal clutter - are you describing a home or an office?!”
