Plymouth Herald

AS A lifelong resident of Plympton I would like to suggest to other residents that if they have any objection to the proposed Morrisons development they write or e-mail the Plymouth Planning Department (idf@plymouth.gov.uk) to make their feelings known.

I would like to state my personal position as being strongly against this development. I do agree something needs to be done to improve the empty run-down eyesore that has been left by the Co-op, Allied Carpets, Focus DIY and the bowling alley all pulling out of this area. But my feeling is that any jobs gained from Morrisons would be lost from other businesses whose turnover would be affected by this development.

The increased congestion on the Plymouth Road would be detrimental to all Plympton residents as the flow of traffic, or lack of it, already causes traffic jams from Embankment Road through to St Mary's Church. The plan to have delivery lorries come out from Marsh Mills roundabout, turn right into Cott Hill and then left into their development would aggravate a very bad traffic bottleneck area which already causes people who live on and around Cott Hill to have to add up to 10 minutes or more to their journey home from work or school.

I suspect that in order to get around the congestion caused by volume of traffic/more traffic lights/more roundabouts, residents of Woodford, Stonebarton and Colebrook areas will find their quiet residential roads would be used by the homeward bound traffic as a rat run to try to get around the main road traffic jams. We need a business that will bring more variety to the Plympton shopping catchment area, by this I don't mean more of the same. We have two Co-ops plus a Co-op petrol station, two Tesco's plus the Tesco super store at Lee Mill, Sainsburys superstore and petrol station at Marsh Mills and a handful of hard working sole traders who must wonder which way they will get squeezed next. We do not want to lose these small shops, which are the life blood of our community, because they cannot fight yet another multi million pound company cutting their market share even more.

I realise not everyone will agree, but if enough people do and say so before it is too late we may eventually get a development that will benefit and compliment Plympton and not give us years of regret.

“@intherealot. You want trees but then you say you will keep on driving to Plymstock!

Mind you I would not want Morrisons out of choice but then if it brings a few jobs to the city it's better than a few empty units that will never be filled!”

“@jabbathebutt - Have you seen the plans for the store and the entrances/exits? I would assume not, as your comment doesn't seem to be based on anything factual.”

“Where would you stick a superstore then Jabba? I think THE most ridiculous place to stick a ''superstore'' would be mount edgcombe. That would be silly. You lot need to stop grasping at the traffic jam argument. It wont wash.”

“Dont talk to me about jobs lost when there are millions unemployed. We need this store the others will survive just fine they will always have their regulars. Many people from Plympton already drive to Plymstock to the Morrisons there. So the only people suffering will be the oil companies with people saving fuel on the long drive. Its time this dreadful eyesore was sorted out. If not level the lot & plant trees on it.”

“I'm a lifelong Plympton resident and shop at either Sainsburys at Marsh Mills or Morrisons at Plymstock. I'd welcome a Morrisons in Plympton, just not on that particular site. Maybe they could take over the Co-op building in the Ridgeway as the Co-op are worse than useless.”
