NEWQUAY residents are invited to visit Newquay Zoo free-of-charge to hear about plans to run the attraction on renewable energy.

Newquay Zoo and Cornwall College Newquay are running the joint consultation on Sunday from 11am to 4pm to showcase proposals including the installation of solar panels.

The zoo hopes to become part of a worldwide trend towards eco-friendly energy. Zoos and safari parks across the globe have introduced a variety of environmental initiatives including renewable energy, organic food and clothes lines and even an eco-train to carry visitors round the park.

If funding applications are successful the money would allow the zoo and college to improve their renewable facilities. Ruth Grant, environmental officer at Newquay Zoo, said: "We are very conscious of our carbon footprint and want to do everything possible to reduce our carbon emissions. We are hoping to gain up to £200,000 in funding and this money would make a huge difference to what we can achieve, but we really need the public support."

Ruth explained that residents attending the consultation will have the opportunity to make comments and suggestions, and children's activities will run throughout the day.

Peter McGregor, project development officer at Cornwall College Newquay, said: "The college is committed to sustainable development and working closely with its industry partners. One of the main focuses is solar efficiency. With Newquay Zoo literally on our doorstep it allows us to co-operate on this project. If successful in our funding application then the college would purchase solar panels which would supply electricity to both the zoo and the college."

The zoo's peak energy demand is during the summer when the college's students are on holiday. Surplus energy can therefore be used by the zoo and vice versa during the winter months.

Community Energy Plus, a Cornwall-based energy charity, will also be at the meeting with free advice on energy efficiency and renewable technologies.

People living in the TR7 postcode area need to bring proof of address to gain free entry. Details from Ruth Grant on 01637 873342 on Thursday or Friday.
