A sign of the times in Gdynia Way
REFERENCE the article in Wednesday's Herald regarding Simon Turner and his fine for driving 38mph along Gdynia Way.
Ever since this road has been re-opened I've been incensed driving through it.
The one sign of 30mph was not there at the beginning, it seemed to be an afterthought and is in a position some way before you enter the road, a position where ones sole concentration is on who's going where? You have buses turning right which can block the view of the sign and cars tuning left to Plymstock and by this time you're into Gdynia Way.
Once in this road you never see another 30mph sign, but you have signs that show you that you cannot stop and counting both directions you have, I think 16, "no U turn" signs. I do not think there is hardly a place one could do a U turn in the whole road, perhaps a three point turn but then you would have to stop, but hey your not allowed to stop.
Come and have a look at the extensive range of tiles we have in stock at our Drake Mill, Estover showroom. Most items in stock to take away or delivery option available.

There are signs for "average speed cameras in operation". What does that mean?
I looked it up in the Highway Code and it doesn't exist and to get an average when I went to school you would have to go over 30 and below 30 within that road otherwise the sign would mean absolutely nothing?
Why don't they put more 30mph signs up, because it would make it a lot easier for drivers, but possibly less revenue for whoever reaps the benefit of the fines.
I really feel for Mr Turner and I think he has a case and if I was him I'd certainly take the matter further.
Please could Natalie Hatswell explain her comment that the cameras are absolutely working, because in my view that statement means absolutely nothing?
I think most people are driving slower through Gdynia Way because they are bewildered, 16 U-turn signs, average speed cameras in operation, no stopping signs, everybody doing different speeds with most wondering what they should be doing?
We waited a long time for this road to re-open and it is a shambles.

“for the love of all that is holy not another person banging on about this. if you cant work out what the speed limit is for the bit of road you are driving on at any time and you admit this then you should be done for driving without due care an attention in addition to the speeding. muppets.”

“So much for Simon Turner's stand by pleading guilty, all hot air and no substance.”

I understand what you're saying but the 40 limit was when the road was one way. It has undergone a massive change.
Also, whilst there may have been some criticism of the limit signs there always has been plenty of warning signs for the cameras.
Some of the excuses are rubbish and the rambling idiot who wrote this letter is unbelievable.”

“@Vinnie_Gar and Waltersmith, the problem was in the period just after the road opened and so most complaints are historical. Today, most locals are aware of the problem. To respond to Vinnie_Gar's point, it wasn't always 30 MPH from the City Centre through Gydinia Way, it was the change in that speed limit which is the issue - it could have been better advertised to assist local drivers in following the law, as examples offered here would indicate (road markings, temporary signage of change in speed limits etc). Waltersmith, hopefully this answers what you are struggling to get your head around. I agree that anyone caught doing 40 MPH through there now deserve all they get.”

“I can't believe you actually looked up the Highway Code to find out about average speed cameras!!
I looked them up on Google and found this link which explains how they work http://tinyurl.com/8ap4a5r - sorry itar5127 - you can get prosecuted for doing an 'average' speed!”

“Hopefully all the publicity this stretch of road has attracted will now make people aware of the 30 speed limit.”

Unless there are signs to the contrary, the speed limit on an urban road with lights is 30 mph. You therefore drive at 30mph unless a road sign tells you that you can do otherwise.
I cannot get my head around what the issue is.”

“In most built up areas, towns and villages, etc., the speed limit is 30mph. Effectively this speed limit is in force wherever there are lamp posts (with a few exceptions determined by the spacing of the lamp posts).
Where the UK speed limit exceeds 30mph, there will be 'repeater' signs reminding you of the higher limit.
This is the Law relating to speed limits.
Accident statistics show that at 40mph nine out of ten children hit by cars either die or receive life changing serious injuries. At 20mph nine out of ten survive.
Live with it!!!!”
