Holder Pinhey claims opening event in Bronze series

Wednesday, October 29, 2008, 23:39

HAYDON PINHEY has made a positive start to the defence of his Plymouth title winning the opening leg of the WEBSF Bronze Waistcoat tour at the Victoria Snooker Centre.

The talented 12-year-old secured a convincing 2-0 victory over another of the city's fine prospects Cody Hall in the event's final.

Pinhey quickly established an early lead with breaks of 38 and 16 to take the opening frame.

And despite Hall's best efforts, Pinhey held his nerve to win the decisive frame and the match on the colours. Pinhey's path to the final included a 2-0 victory over the event's youngest competitor, Daniel Legassick in the last eight.

But Pinhey, after going 1-0 up with breaks of 39 and 20, was forced to dig deep in his semi-final encounter with Peter Beckwith.

However, a reckless attempt at a pot in the second frame, allowed Beckwith back into the tie and he took his chance with aplomb clearing the colours to win on the black and level the match.

A clearly rattled Pinhey took time to recover his momentum in the decider but the city youngster battled through a tense frame to win on the colours.

Hall had showed great potential in a trouble-free route to the final, beating Dylan Chilcott – back on the tour after a year off – 2-0 in the quarter-finals.

He then faced the consistent Chris Coumbe, who most observers believe will be a definite front-runner for this year's crown.

The first frame had been a tad one-sided, with Hall easing into an early lead.

But the match looked to be going all the way as Coumbe dominated the potting and safety battles.

Hall hung on to stay within touching distance before latching onto a loose safety shot from Coumbe to take blue, pink and black to secure the frame by just two points.

In the round-robin stages, Coumbe had topped Group A after four wins, with only Legassick denting his statistics with a 2-1 success. Beckwith finished in second place, also with four victories, Hall was third and Legassick took the final qualifying place.

Pinhey dominated Group B winning all five matches 2-0.

Next qualifier was Adam Lewin, who went down 2-0 to Beckwith in the last eight, with Chilcott third and Chris Corry fourth to qualify.
