Children win sandwich design contest

Jordan Palmer and Leanne Daniels were judged the best in a competition organised by staff from Ivybridge shop Country Maid.
Anne Burns, teacher at Stowford, said: "When Wendy Lillicrap, from Country Maid, visited Year 3 children at Stowford School back in September, she issued them with a challenge to design a new type of sandwich to go on sale in the shop.
"It was a unique opportunity for the children to contribute something positive to a local business and all 47 children submitted ideas which were considered by all the staff in the shop.
"The winners were announced just before half term.
"The Meat Stowford Sandwich was designed by Leanne, who used egg, lettuce, pepperoni, butter and tomato, and the Vegetarian Stowford Sandwich was conceived by Jordan, who combined banana and chocolate spread."
Anne Burns said that the winners were invited to the Country Maid last week and they – and their families – were given the opportunity to sample the winning designs, which had been prepared by staff.
Wendy Lillicrap said: "We were really impressed by the range of designs that the children came up with and the thought they had put into balancing flavours and including healthy options.
"Everyone at the tasting was particularly surprised at how good the banana and chocolate spread sandwich tasted!
"We are delighted to be able to introduce both Stowford Sandwiches to our menu."
The sandwiches went on sale last week – and already the winning designs are selling well, said staff.
