China Fleet shines for blind golf showpiece

Saturday, September 06, 2008, 08:00

ENGLAND captain Tony Shearman has praised the China Fleet Golf and Country Club for hosting the Blind Golf international with Scotland.

Shearman, non-playing captain with the team, also paid tribute to Saltash golfer Steve Cook, who turned in a decent performance for his country.

Shearman admitted the icing on the cake would have been to win the Auld Enemies Cup, for which the two teams were battling for the 21st time.

But he added: "In terms of the event and the organisation, we have got a lot of praise for it from our guys – it's one of the best events I've ever attended.

"I'm disappointed about the result – but there's nothing more our guys could have done to change it, because the Scots brought a very good team."

Shearman said he would no longer be captain when the next Auld Enemies Cup event would be held in England in 2010.

But he said: " China Fleet couldn't do enough for us and I'm sure whoever will be organising the 2010 match would love to come back to Saltash."

Shearman said Saltash's Cook had put in a good performance for England.

He said: "Unfortunately, he didn't win a game, but he played very well – as well as anyone else."

Scotland regained The Auld Enemies Cup after beating England 15.5-8.5 after the 12 singles matches on the final day of the three-day competition.

Scotland now lead the series 10-8 overall, with three contests drawn.

The next encounter will be at Hamilton Golf Club in Scotland in 2009.

The first two days of this year's clash saw Scotland on top after dominating the four-ball, better-balls.

Scotland established a 4.5-1.5 lead after day one and a 9-3 advantage after day two.

Scotland's domination meant England required nine points from the last day if they were to retain the cup, while Scotland needed just three and a half points.
