City students progress in cup after passing Bow test
Andy Cross opened the scoring for the visiting students after 12 minutes of the first half against a Bow side who finished third in the strong Devon and Exeter League's Senior One Division last season.
James Cobley secured the win with a 70th-minute penalty after Gary Simmons had been brought down in the area.
Slack marking at the far post enabled Bow to get a consolation goal in the 88th minute.
YEALM Oldboys defeated Lee Moor 5-3 in a tie between two well-matched sides at Butts Park both battling for a semi final spot in the quest for the prestigious Challenge Bowl.
In a division where the top six teams are separated by only three points, Lee Moor occupy second spot to Yealm's fifth place, and with a superior goal difference may have been considered favourites.
But it was not to be on the day as in an even and enjoyable game Yealm ran out the winners.
Yealm took a 2-0 lead in the first-half but were pegged back when Andy Wall was hauled down in the box for Andrew Tremain to convert the resultant penalty kick.
After five, second half minutes Lee Moor equalised when Wall refused to be thwarted for a second time.
The Oldboys reacted to this set-back by sprinting ahead to gain another two-goal advantage that was reduced to one in the 75th minute when Wes Heaney finished a fine 50-yard free-kick with a great header for the Moor's third goal.
With the outcome in the balance throughout Yealm had just a little too much fire-power.
WESSEX Rangers took over top spot from Old Suttonians in Division One thanks to a 2-0 win over visiting Ordulph Arms.
The first half was entertaining with play going from end-to-end and host club Rangers just about shading the opening 45 minutes play from Ordulph.
But the second half was only five minutes old when the host club made the breakthrough.
Ben Washam spotted Dan Wright making an intelligent run and lobbed the defence for his team-mate to score past Tom Pilbeam in the Ordulph goal.
The match continued to be well-contested with Ordulph owing a debt if gratitude for the excellent form of Pilbeam.
Their impressive goalie safely held on to the many attempts by Wessex, who were seeking to improve their advantage.
And, it required a brilliantly executed goal to beat him in the 85th minute and secure the points that put the Rangers on top of the league.
A series of passes led to Kevin Kendall setting Paul Simpson up for a cracking finish that went in off the underside of Pilbeam's crossbar.
Credit should go to Yealm's Steve Lyndon for producing a pitch that was excellent to play on, especially considering the inclement weather conditions experienced all week.
IF LOCAL sport is to survive the predicted extreme wet weather conditions attributed to global warming then the authorities should follow Plymstock School's example and invest in all-weather pitches.
The school's pitch is one of the finest and clubs do enjoy playing on the fabulous surface.
Certainly Morley Rangers are benefiting by being able to play when many others are not.
And Morley certainly did not play like a side with only one win this season.
For as early as the second minute of this encounter Paul Greenaway should have put them one up but failed to hit the target from close range.
Two minutes later, and Windsor's Richard Hill had made that earlier miss more important as he opened the scoring for the visitors.
A great free-kick from the left found Hill unmarked in the box and he finished with aplomb.
This goal appeared to lift Windsor who exerted much more pressure on the home defence which eventually cracked again on 10t minutes when Ashley Wyatt finished well.
Morley could well have got back in the game, but they were denied a decent shout for a penalty shout when Danny Nurse was impeded and went down in the area.
One minute later, an Andrew Mannell effort was saved as Morley pushed to get themselves back in the game.
However, home goalkeeper Fraser Davies kept the score down to 2-0 when he made a terrific save from a Windsor free-kick from 20 yards out.
Rangers, though, were caught napping in the 48th minute when a brilliant solo effort saw Wyatt run through the centre of the home defence and crash home his second of the afternoon and Windsor's third.
Morley were rewarded with a consolation goal in the 70th minute when Alistair Habermahl scored with a left-foot drive from 15 yards.
