Cosmo's Speight will take unbeaten tag to Swindon show

COSMO Gym super featherweight Jamie Speight will put his unbeaten professional record to the test against experienced operator Shahid 'Sid' Razak in Wiltshire next month.

Speight's six-round contest with seasoned Birmingham veteran Razak is one of seven on Torquay-born promoter Keith Mayo's show, at the Oasis Leisure Centre in Swindon on Friday, December 4.

The 21-year-old Speight made it three wins from three in the paid ranks, with a points success over fellow Devonian John Vanemmenis in Torquay's Riviera Centre on October 24.

Speight's previous victories have both been secured on points, but neither the Kingsteign boxer, nor his Plymouth trainer Glyn Mitchell, are unhappy with that statistic.

However, Mitchell, who trains Speight twice-weekly at his Crownhill-based stable, warned the former Apollo ABC boxer against taking journeyman Razak, who has been stopped just once in 41 bouts since turning pro in 2001, lightly.

"Jamie's a sensible and talented lad who listens and learns," said Mitchell.

"But Razak is the kind of fighter who can prove very awkward for a young boxer learning his trade.

"But if Jamie boxes as he has done this year since turning pro, I can't see anything but another victory for him."

Speight and Vanemmenis brought a terrific response from the Riviera Centre crowd last time out, and the victor by 59-56 in the six-rounder admitted he had learnt much from the encounter.

He is eager to continue his apprenticeship against the 36-year-old Brummie.

"These are the type of guys you must meet at this level – it is all part of the learning curve for a young boxer like myself," said Speight.

"That (the contest with Vanemmenis) was a brilliant fight and I felt I learnt a lot that night.

"That's something I can take with me as my career progresses. At this stage of my career it is essential to get rounds under my belt in readiness for the future when bouts will last longer."
