Harrison ready to make return

Wednesday, August 27, 2008, 06:58

PLYMOUTH'S Johnny Harrison makes his long-awaited return to the ring against unbeaten light middleweight Jack Arnfield in Wigan next month.

Former International Masters champion Harrison is scheduled to meet 19-year-old Arnfield over six rounds at the Robin Park Centre on Sunday, September 14.

And if all goes well, Harrison will be back in action one week later on another Sunday show in Southampton.

Harrison has not fought since he was stopped in the seventh round by city rival Carl Drake on a championship card at the Guildhall on February 29.

Since sharing top billing with Drake for the vacant Western Area light middleweight title, Harrison has been sidelined with an injury to his right hand.

The injury may require surgery at some point, but Harrison is confident the rest away from the ring has helped heal the problem.

And the 31-year-old is now looking forward to getting his career back on track, albeit against an opponent whose form appears to be on a roll.

"I don't know much about him (Arnfield) and, to be honest, I don't care either – I'm just happy to be fighting again," said Harrison, who works out of the Cosmo Gym in Plymouth with manager Rocky Christian and trainer Glyn Mitchell.

"I'm not that concerned about his record – to be honest, I haven't even heard of most of his opponents.

"The only one I know is Billy Smith as I fought and beat his brother, Ernie, a few years ago down at the Pavilions.

"I'm told he's a bit of a banger and has won all six of his fights and that he is still in his teens.

"But he doesn't have my experience at this level.

"And I'm not worried about fighting away from home, either, as I've done it before and, hopefully, a week after I fight Arnfield, I'll be doing it again."

Harrison said his hand injury had not hindered his sparring and training with Mitchell at the Crownhill gym.

"No, the hand's not been too much of a problem, the rest I suppose has given it time to recover," added Harrison.

"Things have been going well in training and I'm already pretty close to the weight limit (11st 4lbs), so I'm on course.

"Hopefully, I can get myself a couple of good performances and results.

"It's my dream to fight in front of my fans in Plymouth again."

Blackpool's Arnfield made his professional bow with a first-round stoppage of Louis Byrne on October 26 last year.

Since then, Arnfield has claimed five more scalps, his latest coming against Terry Adams on May 23, also at the Robin Park Centre, whom he defeated inside three rounds.
