Sunday, October 04, 2009, 19:39

PRIDE of place must go to United Services Mermaid who faced a daunting tie and trip in north Devon against Combe Martin.

If the journey was not bad enough, a 2-0 half-time deficit compounded the visitors' misery before, three, second-half goals from Mermaid claimed the tie.

Veteran Terry Hall showed immense skill when his pass led to Mark King getting their first goal after 60 minutes.

With 10 minutes left Liam Ellis levelled before Hall made it 3-2 with a superb winner eight minutes from time.

Joining Mermaid in the third round are Chard United, who needed extra-time to see off Sidmouth, at Knowle Battery.

Chard, 2-0 up at the break through Dave Mann, almost let it slip, but won 4-3 in extra-time, thanks to Kevin Bashford's winner.

UNIVERSITY A and Plymouth Trophyman go forward to the next round after overcoming Ivybridge Town and Lee Moor Weston Mill Oak Villa, respectively.

It took 15 penalty kicks after extra-time to settle it for the students after the tie had ended 2-2 at full time.

Meanwhile, goals from Scott Rennie, Ben Southern and Andrew Crowmac, who scored the winner, clinched victory for the Trophymen, while Dan Hancocks bagged a brace of goals for Villa.

PLYMOUTH University, with goals from Adam Hicks, Greg Palmer and Matt Bird, are narrowly through to the next round after beating Windsor Car Sales, for whom Matty Sims scored twice.

New boys Plymouth Marjon sailed through to the next round at the expense of Morley Rangers B.

OLD Suttonians had a fine home win against previously unbeaten Tamarside in the division's match of the day.

Tamarside conceded a first-half goal to Luke Mills, while Bradley Swiggs continued his prolific run by adding the second for Sutts early in the second period.

Further goals from Sam Kapazan and Michael Best rounded off a great day and a 4-2 victory for Sutts.

Mount Gould also had a convincing win 6-1 at Tothill against Horrabridge Rangers.

The match was evenly poised at half-time when Mount Gould led through a Chris Graddon goal.

But a further two goals in the opening five minutes of the second half – one a great strike from Lee Doncaster – demoralised the visitors, who conceded three further goals, Graddon and Doncaster both scoring hat-tricks.

Wessex had a comfortable win at Jennycliffe where two goals from Callum Martindale further efforts from Ryan Elliott, Timmy Steel and Mark Raftoneased Rangers to a 5-2 win over Staddiscombe Colts.

Ordulph Arms had a comfortable win against Plymouth Parkway 4-1.

Goals from Joel Anderson (2), Ben Stevens and Jamie Aggiss were enough for Arms.

Yelverton's mini-revival came to an abrupt end at Roborough where the visitiing outfit lost 5-1.

The only bright spot for Yelverton was Matt Frost's excellent strike for their consolation. Roborough's goals were scored by C Smith (2), C Comber (2) and T Rapson.

SWEB held visitors Western Mortgage Services to a 3-3 draw at Plympton.

Mortgage trailed 3-0 after 15 minutes and were staring at a big defeat.

However, a spirited fightback saw them go in only one goal behind at half-time.

Neil Meagor was on hand to get the all important equaliser after Saaed Al Darmarki had scored twice, earlier.

THE day's surprise result came at Knowle Battery where Roborough B lost for the first time in the league this term to Kings Arms Tamerton.

But take nothing away from Kings Arms Tamerton, who fully deserved their 3-1 win.

Kings' goals came from Andy Anderson, Matt Dawe and Nicky Foster, while a fine headed goal from Geoff Miller was Roborough's response.

Elsewhere, Staddiscombe Colts B took a well deserved 3-1 victory from Chaddlewood Miners, at Plympton.

Staddiscombe's goals came from Steve Mahon, Stuart Price and veteran Andy Milne from the penalty spot.

Scott Parson scored the consolation goal for Chaddlewood.

Shakespeare edged Plymouth YMCA in seven-goal thriller played at Brickfields.

The victors were 3-0 ahead at half-time, courtsey of goals from Nigel Roberts and two from Bradley Kinsman.

However, opponents YMCA pegged it back to 3-3 only for debutant Darren Swabey to score the winner 10 minutes from time.

Meanwhile, University B overwhelmed basement side Morley Rangers 6-0.

Scorers for Uni were Matt Kohl (3), Darren Coombes, Joe Moore and Romain Rouchel.

BUCKLAND Milton lost 4-2 to new boys Cofely.

Cofely pulled away and ran out convincing winners at the end.

Buckland's goals came from Luke Jones and a penalty from Ben Godwin while Andrew Herbert, Darryl Butcher, Dave Turner and Shaun Davey scored for the visitors.

After a goalless first-half Yealm Oldboys found home advantage to their benefit and beat Lee Moor 3-1.

Second-half goals from Al Austin, Dave Rowntree and lee Clarke were enough to see Yealm home.
