Sprangle calling for some consistency from Albion

Thursday, November 19, 2009, 07:30

PLYMOUTH Albion flanker Wayne Sprangle has called on the Brickfields club to try and find some consistency.

Graham Dawe's side have won four of their 11 opening Championship matches to sit ninth in the standings.

But they have yet to win two matches in a row and last Saturday at London Welsh they claimed just their first away win of the season and only their second of 2009.

Having finally broke their away duck, Sprangle said Albion have to strive to build on both the result and the performance at Old Deer Park.

"It is a massive boost for us to go to a good side like London Welsh and come away with a win," said Sprangle.

"We do seem to play well against the big teams.

"We have just got to try and find some consistency now and then when we find it, keep it going.

"To get a win away from home at this stage of the season is massive for us because we have struggled on our travels all year.

"There has been a big gap since beating London Welsh and our last away win, so it is a massive confidence booster for us.

"But we have to try and match that performance week-in, week-out."

Albion's display at Old Deer Park saw them combat a strong wind in the first half to trail just 12-5 at the break.

They then came out for the second period with the wind behind them and took full advantage, scoring three converted tries.

The second of those three tries came from Sprangle, who was a half-time replacement for the injured Sean-Michael Stephen.

His superb 40-metre effort put Albion in front for the first time and from there, they went on to claim a deserved win.

"We stuck to our game-plan, our tight play was really good," said Sprangle of Saturday's victory.

"The forwards kept hold of the ball and we just starved them of it.

"We did what we do best – Graham's game-plan paid off.

"It is all about game-management sometimes and I think we managed the game really well.

"We kept the ball in the forwards, we kept it tight, we went wide when we needed to and it paid off, it got us the win."

Sprangle added of his starring role as a replacement: "The replacements are there because it is a team game.

"When you come off the bench you have to make an impact.

"I have always been a good impact player for the team, which is something I don't mind doing.

"I got my chance at half-time – unfortunately for Sean he went off – and I just have to take any chances I get, which is what I did on Saturday.

"I was delighted to score a try, but more importantly, the team came away with a superb victory."

Canadian Stephen had a scan on his injured knee yesterday, but Albion are still waiting for the results.

ALBION will continue to keep close tabs on Taunton's top try scorer Charlie Walker-Blair.

The powerful young winger played for Albion's development team against Launceston. on Monday night.

He played the entire second half after replacing Max Venables.

Albion have watched him play for National Three South West leaders Taunton this season and chairman of rugby Graham Dawe admits Walker-Blair is likely to be turning out for the Warriors again in the future.

"We have asked him to play another game for the Devonport Warriors and invited him to some training sessions," admitted Dawe, who said Taunton were aware of the situation.

Walker-Blair, who comes from Minehead, was a back-row forward before moving to the wing.

Before joining Taunton he had a successful spell playing in New Zealand for Carterton and Wararapa-Bush.

A NUMBER of Albion's development team helped the University of Plymouth to a 24-3 win over Bournemouth University in the second round of the BUSA Cup at Brickfields yesterday.

Univesity of Plymouth are coached by Albion's Danny Thomas and Geoff Griffiths.

FORMER Albion Ladies scrum-half Georgina Rozario has been named on the bench for England's match against New Zealand at Twickenham on Saturday. The game will be played straight after England's men take on the Kiwis.
