Yelverton's Jarvis awarded her county colours

Saturday, November 07, 2009, 07:00

YELVERTON member Gilly Jarvis is continuing her family's tradition of golfing success after being awarded her county colours.

Jarvis – whose mother, also known as Gilly, was a very successful South African international golfer in the 1950s and 1960s – has enjoyed more than her fair share of triumphs.

In addition to her latest recognition, Jarvis has achieved a whole host of honours over the years.

Jarvis – who lived in Rhodesia, Malawi and Botswana before coming to England in 1976, aged 13, to complete her education – kick-started her career by being crowned Oxfordshire Girls golf champion in both 1976 and 1977.

She held the ladies course record at Yelverton Golf Club in 1997 and 2002 and was part of the Yelverton team which won the Still Cup in 2000.

In 2006, Jarvis was the runner-up in the Devon County Championships.

Two years later, she won the Willes Little Ladies county foursomes in 2008 with Sue Pearman.

Jarvis has also lifted the Yelverton Ladies Club Championships Scratch Trophy nine times.

Now, to add to her long list of successes, Jarvis has been awarded her Devon colours, having played 12 matches for the Devon County Ladies' first team.

As if she isn't content with her long list of achievements, Jarvis, who was taught to play golf by her mother, has recently reduced her handicap from five to three with the help of local professional, Laura Eastwood.

Her golfing successes are all the more notable considering Jarvis combines playing the game with running her own accountancy practice. She also assists with running two companies with her husband, Ian.
