There is still more to come, insists Marriott
Graham Dawe's side were beaten 16-13 by Leinster on Saturday in their opening British & Irish Cup game, although it took a controversial penalty late in the game to deny Albion a draw.
However, despite the loss, Plymouth produced a superb display to follow on from their encouraging showings against Nottingham, Bristol and London Welsh.
"We are disappointed to have lost against Leinster," said Marriott.
"Losing the match didn't leave a very nice taste in our mouths, but the key thing for us was that the performance was there.
"There has been a lot said that we are building and developing as a team, but we are happy with where we are going and it is important that we keep on raising the bar.
"We got a performance against Leinster, but we still didn't get the result, so we need to go another notch and take it that step higher and don't move backwards.
"That is important for us, that we keep on building. With the cup, we are not yet halfway through the season, so we still have a long way to go and we know we can go a lot higher as well.
"We have got high aspirations, but it is important that we keep ourselves grounded and keep putting the hard work in."
Albion's defeat on Saturday will be a game Marriott will remember for a long time because he captained the team for the first time in the absence of Kieran Hallett and Geoff Griffiths.
As skipper, Marriott spoke to referee Andrew McMenemy after he penalised Keni Fisilau for a dangerous tackle on 76 minutes and awarded a penalty which ultimately proved to be the deciding factor.
"I was very honoured to be named captain for the match," said Marriott, who is no stranger to on the field responsibilities having skippered Devon.
"I am not worried about the role, particularly. I was just very happy to be picked as captain, although it is a shame we couldn't get the win.
"However, Leinster are a very strong outfit and credit to them, they came here and got a result.
"We are disappointed with how things went, but they are a good side and I can see them doing well in the competition."
Marriott added on the decision by referee McMenemy to penalise Fisilau: "The referee has made the call, I have spoke to him on the pitch and it is just one of those things that don't always go your way. As far as I could see, it looked like a good hit to me, but we have to accept the decision."
Saturday's loss leaves Albion with four Pool A matches left to play as they bid to finish top of the group and qualify for the semi-finals stage.
Next up is a trip to South Wales on Friday night to take on a Newport side, who beat Exeter Chiefs 21-14 in their opening match.
"We are disappointed losing to Leinster because the game was there for us to win, but it is important we don't rest on our laurels or feel sorry for ourselves and we get back up and go again," said Marriott.
"We have got to bounce back and put the same performance in against Newport.
"It isn't a must-win match yet, but it is a game we definitely want to go and win.
"I am sure all the boys will be massively keen to do that, especially after what happened on Saturday against Leinster.
"I have got total confidence that we have the quality to go there and get a result."
