It's seven-up in the team of the year category

Thursday, November 26, 2009, 07:00

THERE are a magnificent seven entries in the running for this year's Team of the Year award to be revealed at Plymouth's Pavilions next Monday night.

But the quantity has not diluted the quality of the candidates in the final shortlist on the eighth annual Herald Sports Personality of the Year awards.

There are five other category winners' names to be read out by our guest of honour, Barry McGuigan at the city's gala sporting celebration.

So, let's cast our eye over the list of candidates, starting with Plymouth Marjon Hockey Club.

This year has provided a double success for Marjon with both the men's and women's first teams gaining promotion.

Marjon's men were promoted to England Hockey's National League (Western Conference), while the ladies were elevated to Premier One of the West Hockey League.

Remarkably, Marjon's ladies remained unbeaten all season, winning 19 times and drawing three matches.

They also achieved a record total of goals, 98, while conceding only 17.

Marjon men were almost as impressive winning 16 games, drawing three and losing three.

"Both sides are mutually supportive on and off the pitch and work together for the benefit of the club," said veteran Marjon striker Jackie Daw.

"Members of each team are involved in coaching or umpiring within the club structure, providing good role models for the youth members.

"Players within the team range from 15-47 years of age proving that a good balance of youth and experience can make a difference."

There was outstanding success, too, for the Derriford-based club, as Plymouth Marjon under-16s basketball team gained a deserved nomination.

Marjon under-16s have enjoyed a stellar season having gone unbeaten to win a title and coming within a whisker of clinching a league and cup double.

After ending the previous 2007/08 Conference season with a 1-15 record, Marjon, who were then basically an under-15 side playing up an age group, turned their fortunes around dramatically.

The club ended the 2008/09 campaign in the same Conference league boasting a 16-0 record and being hailed as league champions.

Additionally, coach Ben Roper's team went on an impressive U16 Sureshot Cup run.

They reached the final having beaten three, Premier League powerhouses along the way and all without a home tie, before losing to Manchester in the final.

"This is the first time in the England Basketball Junior National League history that a team from the South West has reached a final," said Anne Gillbard secretary at Plymouth Marjon Basketball Club.

"The team had a great work ethic which was the basis of all their success."

Another of our finalists, Plympton cricket club, have also made 2009 a year to remember for all the right reasons.

Plympton confirmed their position as the city and the region's leading team for a second, successive year after finishing runners-up in the Premier Division of the Devon Cricket League.

The Harewood Park club, skippered by former Devon bowler Keith Donohue, completed the 2009 campaign one place higher than last year, behind champions Sidmouth.

In finishing second, Plympton achieved their best finish in the top-flight of Devon cricket.

Onwards and upwards should also be the catchphrase of our next successful team, Plymouth Argyle's disability squad.

Argyle have enjoyed a superb 2009 winning back-to-back national titles at the FA's prestigious Ability Counts tournament in London this summer.

In so doing, manager Graham Eyles' Pilgrims have rewritten the competition's history books after successfully defending their Premier League title.

Argyle came so close to making the tournament a double winning occasion as the Pilgrims' ladies finished second in their category, at the David Beckham Centre in Greenwich.

Success and our next candidate, Plymouth Leander, are far from strangers, but this year the city swimming club have exceeded previous highs.

Under their Great Britain coach Jon Rudd – also a finalist in the Coach of the Year category – Leander completed an unprecedented hat-trick of national titles in 2008/09.

It was also a year to remember for Leander sprint swimmer Antony James, who claimed the scalp of Olympic icon Michael Phelps while Emma Wilkins won a place at the World Championships

Ivybridge Rugby Union Club have enjoyed a memorable year – both at senior and junior level.

The first team, under former player and now coach Spenser Owen, have gained promotion to South West One (West).

Ivybridge Colts (under-18s) have won all their fixtures, including the Devon Cup during the 2008/09 campaign.

The colts have also won praise for the sporting manner in which they play their fixtures, with the club being congratulated by several nominators for their adherence to the spirit of game.

Another extremely successful outfit in 2009 are Astor Ladies' formidable table tennis team.

Astor flew the flag for Plymouth in Europe this year after clinching the British League title in 2008/09.

The supremely successful city side competed in the European Cup in Russia – the third time Astor Ladies have gone into the event as British champions.

Astor are skippered by Liz May and under their ambitious chairman Joseph Louei, they harbour hopes of hosting a major international tournament in Plymouth in the next few months.
