Who wins your vote for 2008?

Tuesday, September 09, 2008, 12:00

THIS year's search for The Herald Sports Personality of the Year 2008 – launched today – offers local pundits a bewildering array of candidates to vote for in Olympic year.

There will be plenty of top-rate sporting talent on show in what will be the seventh annual awards evening.

It will be held on Monday, December 1 at the Pavilions, and for the second year running has Michael Spiers Jewellers as its main sponsors.

The format of the 2008 awards gives you, the reader the opportunity to cast your vote for your sporting heroes in six separate categories.

They are: Sports Personality of the Year, Young Sports Personality, Amateur Sports Personality, Coach of the Year, Team of the Year and Outstanding Contribution.

And we are again awarding a Champagne Moment – a new addition last year – which celebrates the outstanding highlight of the sporting year.

Again, you can nominate your own Champagne Moment.

In the running for the main prize are last year's Sports Personality of the Year, Plymouth Diving's Tom Daley, who at 14 is one of the youngest ever Great Britain Olympians and his club colleague Tonia Couch, who can hold her head high after an inspiring performance in Beijing.

Tavistock's Heather Fell recovered from a career blighted by injury to claim a silver medal in the modern pentathlon.

Former Plymouth Leander swimmer Cassie Patten won an incredible bronze in the 10km event.

Nobody will forget the torment of weightlifter Michaela Breeze, who defied agonising pain to continue competing before a back injury finally forced her to retire.

Ivybridge Community College teacher Breeze received a standing ovation from a mainly Chinese crowd as a television audience around the world shared in her tears of frustration.

And what about the exploits of disabled table-tennis star David Wetherill, who is currently competing in the Beijing Paralympics?

Wetherill defied the experts to go to the Paralympics, and ranked world number nine in his class, saw off higher-rated opposition.

One of the nominees for the Coach of the Year title could be Team GB and city diving coach Andy Banks, who piloted Daley and Couch to their big moments in Beijing.

Team of the Year holders, Airwaves Plymouth Raiders had another excellent season, finishing third in the BBL – their highest-ever position in the United Kingdom's top-flight of basketball.

And speedway's Plymouth Devils picked up their first-ever piece of silverware in a short three-year history, winning the Conference Trophy.

Devils also forced their way into the Conference League play-offs for the third year running and have high hopes of riding in the Premier League next season.

On the amateur front, Plymouth had an impressive season.

City rugby side OPMs, inspired by veteran Sammy Matts who didn't let a broken arm get in his way, were promoted as champions from Devon One to the Cornwall/Devon league. Following suit were Plymstock Albion Oaks, who went up via the harder route of the play-offs.

And there was also coach Sue Gullick's Plymouth Pilgrims netball team, who won the notoriously difficult Regional One title and just failed to make the national leagues in a play-off shoot-out.

The point is it's up to you, the reader to make up your mind who you want to win.

Proceeds from the evening will help fund grass-roots sport in Plymouth as well as celebrate the city's sporting excellence.

Closing date for nominations is Saturday, October 18 with the shortlist for the six categories, selected by an expert panel, set to be revealed in early November.

Nominations in all categories can be sent to us via sports@theplymouthherald.co.uk, or by post to 'Sport', The Herald, 17 Brest Road, Derriford, Plymouth PL6 5AA.

Please clearly mark your nominations 'Herald Sports Personalities' and don't forget to include your name, address and daytime telephone number.
