WINGER Joe Lennox has two aims for the rest of the season – to play his part in Argyle retaining their Football League status and to earn a new contract with them.

Lennox has ended up at Home Park after being released by Championship club Bristol City earlier this month.

The 20-year-old signed a contract with the Pilgrims until the end of the season, after impressing manager Carl Fletcher while on trial.

Lennox made his debut as a late substitute in the 1-1 draw against Crawley Town at Home Park last Saturday.

That was his first taste of action in the Football League, and he wants to build on that between now and the end of the season.

Lennox was snapped up by Fletcher after scoring in a behind closed doors reserve team friendly away to Exeter City, which ended in a 6-1 defeat for Argyle.

He told Herald Sport: "I was here on trial for a week just after Christmas, and then they wanted to see me in a reserve game.

"I played in that, and scored, and they signed me straight away. It was a relief.

"I'm here until the end of the season and I will just have to try to prove myself and earn another contract."

Bristol-born Lennox had never been to Plymouth – or Home Park – until starting his trial with Argyle.

He was aware of the club's recent trials and tribulations, on and off the pitch, which included seven months in administration during 2011.

But the Pilgrims are now fully focused on ensuring they escape relegation from League Two and those hopes have been raised by picking up 13 points from their last nine games.

Lennox said: "I think it's a good set-up here. They have got the club back after all of their troubles and just need to try to keep in this league.

"Everyone is getting confidence now and I think the team is good enough to stay up."

Lennox has been impressed by his new team-mates at Argyle and the management style of Fletcher.

He said: "They are a great bunch of lads. I have a lot of fun with them, and the manager is good.

"He (Fletcher) likes to get the young ones involved, which is good for me.

"He also likes to get the ball down and play football."

Lennox was at Bristol City from the age of 14, and graduated from their academy to the professional ranks at Ashton Gate.

But, after 18 months without any first team football for the Robins, the winger knew he needed to move on – and Argyle offered him that opportunity.

Lennox said: "It's a massive club, and I wanted to come here as soon as I had the chance to play some first team football.

"I have had to leave home and move down here, so it has been very strange, but I'm getting used to it and I'm enjoying it."

Lennox was sent on as an 87th minute substitute against Crawley and was involved in the build-up to Argyle's last-gasp equaliser.

With his first touch of the ball, he set up an attack which led to winger Ashley Hemmings having a close range shot saved by Crawley 'keeper Scott Shearer.

Lennox took the resulting corner and, when the Reds could not clear their lines properly, Argyle centre-back Maxime Blanchard scored with an acrobatic overhead kick.

"It was a great debut," said Lennox. "I got on the ball straight away and I think I took on two players and then slotted it through.

"We had the corner from that chance, which I took, and we scored. It was a great feeling, especially on my debut as well.

"Crawley are pushing for promotion and they are a good side, but I think we are as good as any team in the league."

Argyle continue their fight against relegation when they travel to the Potteries tomorrow to take on Port Vale.

Lennox said: "I'm looking forward to it and, hopefully, I will get some more time on the pitch."
