Show support for superfast broadband
CITY people have been urged to "show a demand" for superfast broadband to ensure Plymouth gets the fastest internet connection possible.
Council leader Tudor Evans spoke out after a report showed 88 per cent of city premises are now covered.
Although that is above the national average, city business leaders have long been pushing for better connections, saying improved speed would boost the economy and enterprise.
The report, put before Plymouth City Council's overview and scrutiny panel, stressed the need for continued investment to stay ahead of the game.

"The best way the city can influence when we receive upgrades is to show demand for broadband," Cllr Evans said.
"We're already very well connected, and this bears out much hard work in the city.
"But you can never rest easy when it comes to technology.
"We need everyone to help show that we are a forward-thinking city that needs the latest, fastest and best technology."

“@ leeroymeboy - Spot on. Methinks someone is trying to get something on the backs of others again. Does Tudor really want us all to have superfast broadband or is it a personal desire?”

“As long as PCC dont choose Virgin media as they are absolute pants
Myself along with a number of people that live around me (and thats just the people i know) and many others across plymouth feel VM is a rip off. We have been suffering from what VM term as high utilisation basicly meaning we pay for upto 30mb but actually only get on average 10mb because they have oversold thier product and do not have the infrastruture in to handle it (and they knew this when they purchased from telewest) but it hasnt stopped them selling a product they cant provide on a regular basis and this has been ongoing issue all over the country with VM for years as for watching programes online so VM customers may be lucky enough to get that but most of us watch in dribs and drabs as programes buffer every 30 seconds or so and VM dont seem to care. Superfast broadband ideal for gamers they say with no limits (except in the small print you will read they put caps in place between 10 am in the moning to 10/11 pm at night to make sure all users get a fair amount? but surely if you sell a product at 30mb you should be capable of supplying that”

“It does mean that video streaming, which is increasingly popular, is less prone to stalling when usage is high. And it was cheaper than my existing package, too, so the installation will have paid for itself in less than a year.”

“I'm not sure what the benefits are to be hard. Emails don't send quicker. Anyone who does any serious grunt work will have a 100/100 server they can remote in, even on the slowest connections from their home.
If you're in the webhosting business, for example, then you'll have a leased line.
Faster doesn't mean more productive.”
