TORPOINT'S HMS Raleigh shortlisted ten candidates to take part in a re-creation of Captain Scott's famous Antarctic expedition in a gruelling test of strength and fitness.

The hopeful explorers endured a series of mental and physical tests similar to those undertaken by the Royal Navy's newest recruits in a three-day exercise.

A spokeswoman said the challenge included training at altitude on HMS Raleigh's high ropes course.

"Standing at 13 metres high, it places students in a situation of controlled stress, requiring them to climb ropes and ladders, cross walkways, balance on a high beam and perform the ultimate leap of faith from a standing platform to a trapeze," she continued.

"Their ability to work as a team against the elements was tested in HMS Raleigh's sinking ship simulator, which rocks from side to side and fills with water. The event also examined each candidate's physical fitness during an obstacle course run and a military fitness session. Candidates were also required to give presentations."

Antony Jinman, a member of the selection panel and the leader of the overland party, said just one of the group would join the International Scott Centenary Expedition (ISCE) which aims to visit Scott's last camp, where he and two other men perished from exposure and starvation 100 years ago. Two of Scott's comrades had died earlier in the mission.

"We will also have two others in reserve but will offer all candidates the opportunity to get involved with the expedition at some level, whether in a logistical role or helping with our outreach work," Mr Jinman continued.

"What we are looking for in the candidates is not so much the fittest person, but the person who is most passionate and has the determination to function well in a team and succeed in the expedition."

Captain Steve Murdoch, the commanding officer of HMS Raleigh, said initial naval training was designed to instil core values of commitment, courage, discipline, respect, integrity and loyalty.
