IT'S been a big year for Plymouth. We've hosted some amazing events, attracting thousands of visitors from across the UK and beyond… and there's even more to come.

While the sun hasn't always come out to play, everyone has been guaranteed a really warm welcome, with loads to see and do.

Massive crowds packed the Hoe in May to witness the arrival of the Olympic Flame in Plymouth, followed by a spectacular Armed Forces Day National Event in June.

People thronged the Barbican for the Plymouth Harbour Weekend and gathered at the Big Screen in hordes, first for fantastic live coverage of Wimbledon and later to cheer on Team GB in the Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Thousands headed to our waterfront for the 16th British Firework Championships last month and, despite challenging conditions on the second night, competitors wowed spectators with some stunning displays.

Hosting first-class events like these is fast positioning Plymouth as a major visitor destination that really can compete with the world's best.

We are just about to stage the city's inaugural Marine City Festival, including our first ever Seafood Festival, a lively arts and entertainment programme, the Ecover Blue Mile and much more.

Hot on its heels will be the Plymouth International Book Festival, which is another first for the city, bringing together bookworms and lovers of all things literary.

Finally, we'll be rounding off the summer season with a fantastic homecoming celebration for Plymouth's Olympic and Paralympic athletes, including Tom Daley and Ruta Meilutyte, who captivated the world with their medal-winning performances at London 2012.

We look forward to seeing you there!

“Still carrying on your little vendetta, Rick? If Plymouth really tried to put on a show, you might be surprised by my 'aspirations'. But a telly, the same old fireworks celebrating nothing in particular and a flame that fizzled all over the country hardly make Plymouth the thrill centre of the western world.

Anyone with real aspirations for better from this complacent city is automatically labelled 'a moaner'. That's more of a comment on the labellers' low horizons than an insult.”

Sadly some people will never be happy no matter how hard you try to raise their aspirations.

“Thats what wrong with Plymouth, not the city but the moaners who live here !
Llook at that amazing photo of the fireworks on the Hoe, it looks world class and thats what Plymouth could be if only people stopped moaning and started working hard or just supported this great city once in while.
The Olympic torch I thought was amazing to see and be there, the fireworks agian proved to be a major attraction the armed Forces week just showed the support for our local heros past present and future.
Granted Plymouth has issues but at least support it when we get things right !”

“"First-class events like these"? A big telly, some fireworks and watching a burning stick go by? How easily pleased are you?”
