One week to Christmas countdown in Plymouth
In just one week’s time Plymouth will be transformed into a sparkling winter wonderland as its Christmas lights are turned on and the Winter Festival begins.
On Thursday 22 November, the Plymouth Winter Festival will officially launch with the Christmas Lights Switch On event, organised by Plymouth City Centre Company and Plymouth City Council.
Presenters from Heart FM and ITV Westcountry will be taking to the stage on Cornwall Street from 4pm, to introduce a whole host of entertainment including performances from the Military Wives Choir, Joker and Gaga Unleashed, before panto star Christopher Biggins joins the Military Wives Choir to turn on the lights at 6.15pm.
The Christmas lights will also be turned on across the Barbican and waterfront, illuminating the whole of Plymouth as the festive period begins.

To coincide with the Christmas Lights Switch On, the Christmas Market stalls on the Piazza will open for the first time, and shops across the city will stay open until 8pm, for the first week of Thursday late night shopping.
Families will also have their first chance to take children to visit Santa, at his brand new grotto on Frankfort Gate, which will remain open every day until Christmas Eve.
Launched by Plymouth City Centre Company in 2010, the Plymouth Winter Festival is aimed at attracting shoppers from Devon, Cornwall, and the wider South West region to visit Plymouth in the lead up to Christmas to take advantage of the city’s unique retail offer and fantastic line up of events.
Clint Jones, Plymouth City Centre Manager said: “The excitement is really building as the Christmas shopping season approaches, and what better way to kick everything off than a fantastic Christmas Lights Switch On. The event has proven extremely popular in previous years, attracting tens of thousands of visitors to the city centre, which provides a great boost to retailers as well as creating a lively and vibrant atmosphere.
“This year’s entertainment line up has something for everyone, from the hugely popular Military Wives Choir to local favourites Joker, and of course the brilliant Christopher Biggins. Combined with the late night shopping, Christmas Markets, outdoor ice skating and Santa’s first appearance in Plymouth, it’s an evening not to be missed.”
The 2012 Winter Festival will see Plymouth Waterfront Partnership teaming up with Plymouth City Centre Company to organise events and entertainment across the city. New additions to the Winter Festival on the waterfront include weekly Christmas Farmers’ Markets at West Pier, starting on Saturday 24 November, a late night shopping evening on the Barbican on Wednesday 12 December and a shop window trail for families to follow throughout December
Plymouth’s countdown to Christmas will continue throughout December, with a packed line up of events and entertainment taking place across the city.
City centre late night shopping continues every Thursday, Santa’s Grotto and the Christmas Markets remain open until Christmas Eve, and the winter ice rink is open daily for regular skating sessions, lessons and private bookings.
On Thursday 6 December, the Twinkling Twilight Lantern Parade will wind its way along the city streets, with 300 local school children showing off their handmade lanterns, led by Santa himself in a reindeer-drawn sled.
There is also an exciting line up of festive shows at Plymouth’s top entertainment venues, with The Greatest Story Never Told at the Barbican Theatre, Dick Whittington at the Theatre Royal and Cinderella on Ice at Plymouth Pavilions.
