The club building, which was then based at the junction of Glebe Avenue and Callington Road, Saltash, has since been demolished.
It is understood Down worked at the club for around two decades before retiring in the mid 1980s.
Police were keen to stress the investigation had no links to any current youth club in Saltash or of clubs which had a similar name in later years.
Down was released on bail until December 10 when he will be sentenced at Exeter Crown Court.
